Viola Size Guide report
Violas and violins are similar in structure and material but larger in size and more variable in timbre. Usually, the viola is larger and has a longer bow. Unlike violins, violas do not have a standard length. The length of the best viola is 21 inches to harmonize with the violin's sound. However, this size can not be performed easily like a violin.
Over the centuries, violists and violin makers have continued to modify the size and shape of the viola, making it shorter and lighter while ensuring a large sound box to embody the viola's tone. Violas made for children are shortened to 12 inches in length.
When considering purchasing these instruments, you should understand viola sizing since they come in different sizes. Furthermore, age matters; violas designed for adults are not convenient for children, and vice versa. This post explains more details about the viola sizing.
Viola Size Guide
When the viola first originated in Italy, it was divided into two types: Alto and Tenor. The Alto is mostly around 15 inches to 16 inches, while the Tenor is larger, known to be over 18 inches. Because the Tenor is too bulky to play, viola makers gradually stopped distinguishing between Alto and Tenor.
The optimal size of a viola is based on the size of the user. There are many different body size variations from 12" to 17". Generally speaking, 15 inches to 17 inches are called adult pianos, and below 14 inches are children's pianos. For the sound requirements of the viola, many people will try to choose a larger viola to obtain a larger volume when their body shape allows it. Especially in terms of bass, a viola with a larger body tends to produce a richer and more robust sound.

Recommended Viola Size By Arm Length
Measurement of the length from the neck to the middle of the left-hand palm is necessary for choosing the right viola size. Extend and raise the left arm perpendicular to the body, then measure from the neck to the middle of the palm. Once you have the measurement, check the chart below and select a size.
Viola Size | Arm Length | Age |
---|---|---|
12"-13" | 21.9"-23.2" | 8-10 |
14" | 23.2"-24.9" | 8-10 |
15" | 24.9"-25.6" | 11+ and Adult |
15.5" | 25.6"-26.4" | 11+ and Adult |
16" | 26.4"-27.1" | Adult |
16.5" | 27.1"+ | Adult |
Conclusion
Viola sizing is much different than violin sizing. When choosing a violin size, you want to find the right fit; rather than go for a larger size, people are recommended to go for the smaller size. Choosing a viola is different. The viola should fit slightly bigger. A 16" or 16.5" viola is ideal for an adult viola student unless you have a small physical frame. If your arm length and hands are smaller, we suggest a 15" or 15.5" but nothing smaller than a 15" viola. If you are doubtful about the sizing, ask your local music shop for assistance.
