Uranus Size report

Uranus is one of the eight planets in the solar system. It is the seventh planet from the sun of the solar system. It ranks third in volume (larger than Neptune) and fourth in mass (smaller than Neptune) in the solar system. It revolves almost horizontally around the sun.

Uranus was the first planet discovered by humans using a telescope. William Herschel discovered the planet in his courtyard on March 13, 1781. The interior and atmosphere of Uranus and Neptune differ from that of the larger gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn), and astronomers established a classification of ice giants to define them. It is the biggest of the ice giants.

William Herschel tried unsuccessfully to name his discovery Georgium Sidus after King George III. Instead, the planet was named for Uranus, the Greek god of the sky, as suggested by Johann Bode. This post will tell you more about this fascinating planet, from its surface color to structure and size.

Descriptions of Uranus Size

Uranus is mainly composed of rocks and various water-ice substances with different compositions. Uranus doesn't have a true surface. The planet is mostly swirling fluids, so a spacecraft would have nowhere to land on Uranus. Its main elements are hydrogen (83%), followed by helium (15%). Uranus does not have a rocky core like Saturn and Jupiter, and its metallic composition is distributed throughout the crust in a relatively even state. Uranus's surface appears magenta blue when viewed directly with the naked eye because its methane atmosphere absorbs most of the red spectrum.

Structure

The Standard Model structure of Uranus consists of three layers:

  1. A rocky core at the center
  2. An icy mantle in the middle
  3. A hydrogen/helium shell at the outermost

The main components of Uranus' atmosphere are hydrogen, helium, methane, and deuterium. Uranus is the planet with the coldest atmosphere in the solar system, with a minimum temperature of 49K (-224°C). Uranus cannot support life as we know it.

Uranus has 27 known natural satellites and 13 known fainter rings. It has two sets of rings. The inner system of nine rings consists mostly of narrow, dark grey rings. There are two outer rings: the innermost one is reddish like dusty rings elsewhere in the solar system, and the outer ring is blue like Saturn's E ring.

Radius And Distance

Uranus is slightly larger in diameter than its neighbor Neptune, yet smaller in mass. It is the second least dense planet; Saturn is the least dense of all.

  • With a radius of 15,759.2 miles (25,362 kilometers), and a diameter of 31.763 miles (51.118 kilometers), Uranus is four times wider than Earth.
  • Uranus is 19.8 astronomical units away from the Sun. One astronomical unit (abbreviated as AU) is the distance from the Sun to Earth. It takes 2 hours and 40 minutes from this distance to travel from the Sun to Uranus.

Density, Mass, And Volume

  • The density of Uranus is 1.27 grams per cubic centimeter, making it the second least dense planet in the solar system. Its low density is because the planet is made of ice rather than gas.
  • Uranus is significantly more massive, weighing in at 86 septillion kilograms. Uranus has around 14.5 times the mass of Earth. It has the fourth-largest mass in the Solar System.
  • The planet has a volume of 6.83x1013 cubic kilometers, which is about 63 times the volume of Earth.

Orbit and Rotation

Uranus takes about 17 hours to rotate once (a Uranian day) and about 84 Earth years to complete an orbit of the Sun (a Uranian year). Uranus rotates from East to West. Uranus's rotation axis can lie on the orbital plane, and the inclination angle is as high as 97.77°, which makes its seasonal changes completely different from other planets. Only in a narrow area near the equator can you experience rapid day and night, but the Sun is very low, as in the polar regions of the Earth; the rest area has long days or long nights.

Conclusion

The volume of Uranus is about 64 times that of Earth. Its atmosphere contains 83% hydrogen, 15% helium, and 2% methane gas. The surface temperature averages minus 220°C. Uranus has 27 known natural satellites named after characters from the operas of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. The names of the five main satellites are Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. Humanity's exploration of this mysterious blue planet has never stopped.
