Solid tumors are divided into two categories: malignant tumors and benign tumors. Carcinogenic tumors can invade surrounding tissues in the body, and as these tumors grow, some cancer cells may migrate to other parts of the body.

A noncancerous tumor, also called a benign tumor, tends not to metastasize or spread to other parts of the body. Most benign tumors are not fatal, but some brain tumors can still cause inflammation because of their ability to compress and obstruct surrounding organs and tissues. Doctors can use a biopsy to determine whether a tumor is benign or carcinogenic and schedule further treatment.

Some tumors are classified as "pre-malignant" -- that is, such tumors are not metastatic at the time of diagnosis, but they have the potential to metastasize in the future.

TNM staging system For Tumor

Doctors use the TNM staging system for most types of cancer. The TNM system uses letters and numbers to describe the tumor (T), lymph nodes (N), whether or not cancer has spread or metastases (M). The letter T is followed by a letter, number, or combination of letters, which gives additional information about the tumor.

• TX means that there is no information about the tumor or cannot be measured.

• T0 means that there is no evidence of a tumor.
• Tis refers to a tumor "in situ." It means that the tumor is only found in the cells where it started. It has not spread to any surrounding tissue.
• T1-T4 describes the size and location of the tumor on a scale of 1 to 4. A larger or more tumor that has grown deeper into nearby tissue will get a higher number.
