The Tsujun Bridge is an aqueduct bridge used to irrigate farmland and divert water. 150 years ago (1854, the Edo period), the masons of Higo used the most advanced technology in the past and carried out a fearless challenge like an unprecedented difficulty so that the dry land got water.

The water of life flocked to the Tsujun Bridge's arches still nourishes the vast local terraces. The center of the stone bridge can spray water jets, and the scene is extremely spectacular. The round arch bridge was built with rock and plaster, and it is still well preserved and in normal operation today. Let's learn more about the design and size of this bridge.

Size and Features of the Tsujun Bridge

In 1854, Honosuke Fuda of Soshoya in Yabe Town built the largest stone-arched waterway bridge in Japan to transport water to the Shiraishi Terrace, which was troubled by the lack of water supply. About 100 hectares of farmland were irrigated by diverting water from the upper Sasahara River, which is 6 kilometers away, through the aqueduct with a total length of about 30 kilometers. The aqueduct can supply 15,000 square meters of water day and night, fully moisturizing the paddy fields.

The old bridge was designated as a national important cultural property in 1960; there is a famous water-releasing ceremony during the Hassaku Festival. There are three stone pipes for water delivery inside the bridge. After the hydrant is pulled out, the water spews out from the center of the bridge. The aqueduct is now a tourist destination with complete public facilities, such as a big parking lot, an onsite restaurant, farm stands, and a few gift kiosks. Many travelers come here on weekends around the time of the water release.

Final Words

The Tsujun bridge is mostly known for its unique water release system, which is still in use today. Every weekend and holiday from late spring to late fall (approximately May to November), gallons of water are released on the bridge arch at noon, showing stunning 19th-century architectural wisdom for visitors. The water does not irrigate the surrounding rice fields today; it is a method of flushing the silt and sandy deposits from the aqueduct pipes. Visitors can climb the path beside the bridge, stand on top of the aqueduct, and closely observe the entire waterproofing process and the bridge body.
