Topkapi Palace Size Guide report

Topkapi Palace (Turkish: Topkapı Sarayı) is a royal palace in Istanbul, Turkey. It has been the official residence and main residence of the Ottoman Sultans in the city from 1465 to 1853. Today it is the main tourist attraction in the city. The translation of Topkapi Palace is "Gate of the Cannon"; there were cannons placed in the bunker in the past, so it was named after it.

Topkapi Palace Size And Structure

Sultan Mehmet II, who conquered Constantinople in the Byzantine Empire, ordered the construction of Topkapi Palace to begin in 1459. The palace consists of four courtyards and other small buildings, about 4,000 people formerly lived there, and the former palace covered a vast coastal area. Over the centuries, the Royal Palace has been expanded and renovated. The Topkapi Palace Complex is located at Cape Saragirio, the highest point on the coast, overlooking the Golden Horn and the Bosporus Strait.

The shape of Topkapi Palace is like a rough rectangle, and high walls surround the whole palace. It is mainly divided into four courtyards and the harem. Each courtyard served different purposes and was separated by a gate incrementally restricted entry, culminating in the most-private third and fourth courtyards. The main axis is from south to north, the outermost courtyard (the First Court) is at the south end, and the other courts face the north stretch. To the west and south of the palace is the former Imperial Garden, which is now Gulhani Park, while to the east and south is the Sea of Marmara.

There are seven gates in the entire palace, 4 facing the land and 3 facing the sea, the main gate facing the Hagia Sophia. This palace, with its historic buildings, collections, and nearly 300,000 archive documents, is one of the largest museum palaces in the world.
