The Magdeburg Water Bridge Size report

The Magdeburg Water Bridge (German: the Kanalbrücke Magdeburg or Wasserstrassenkreuz) is an aqueduct connecting two important shipping canals in Germany: the Elbe-Havel Canal and the Mittellandkanal near Magdeburg, which leads directly to the heart of the Ruhr Valley, an important industrial town in Germany.

As early as 1919, the Germans had a plan to connect the two major canals. It officially started construction in the 1930s. However, the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent division of Germany caused this project to be delayed again and again. Until the reunification of Germany in the 1990s, the bridge was reconstructed.

The Magdeburg Water Bridge is located outside Hohenwater near Magdeburg, completed in October 2003. Interestingly, ships can sail freely on this bridge. The Water Bridge also has been open to tourists worldwide and provides parking, bicycle paths, sidewalks, etc.

Size and Design of the Magdeburg Water Bridge

The Magdeburg Water Bridge took six years to build at the cost of 500 million euros and opened in 2003. The Magdeburg Water Bridge is the strangest in the world; as its name suggests, it was designed for water. The bridge crosses the Elbe River and connects the Mittellandkanal of German and the Elba-Hawel Canal, connecting Berlin's inland port with ports along the Rhine. A total of 24,000 tons of steel and 68,000 cubic meters of concrete were used to construct the "huge sink" to allow transport ships to navigate the Elbe.

The bridge is also equipped with a double lock that helps to lower and raise the ships when water levels of rivers or canals differ. The waterway on the bridge and the Elbe under the bridge can pass large ships at the same time. The Magdeburg water bridge allows ships to pass on the canal to shorten the way between the Ruhr area and Berlin.

Dimensions of the Magdeburg Water Bridge

The Magdeburg Water Bridge is 918 meters long, making it the longest navigable aqueduct in the world; its length has two parts: 690 meters over land and 228 meters over the water. This bridge is a type of beam bridge with a width of 34 meters and the main span of 106 meters. A span is a distance between the two intermediate supports of the structure. The water depth of the bridge reaches 4.25 meters.

Final Words

The Magdeburg Water Bridge makes it possible for ships traveling between the canals to bypass the Elbe without using the locks and directly shorten the voyage by 12 kilometers. Because Magdeburg can reach Hamburg's seaport and Dresden, the Czech Republic in the south through the Elbe River, such an important geographical location makes it a transportation hub for waterways, railways, and roads. Although the water bridge is mainly built for ease of ship travel, the bridge also offers pathways on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists.
