Tatara Bridge Size report

Tatara Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge located in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, connecting Ikeuchi Island in Hiroshima Prefecture and Daimishima in Ehime Prefecture. The bridge was completed in 1999 and opened on May 1 of the same year. The total investment in the bridge is about 1.1 billion US dollars.

The cable-stayed bridge was selected after considering factors such as coordination with the surrounding environment, economy, construction period, etc. The cables are arranged in a fan-shaped arrangement of double-sided cables, and the longest cable is about 460 meters with a diameter of 170 mm. Considering the wind resistance, the designer chose a bridge tower structure close to an inverted V shape.

Tatara Bridge, with a center span of 890 m long, is the second longest span cable-stayed bridge in the world. It is also a famous landmark over the sea. Let's find out more interesting facts about its size and designs.

Size and Features of the Tatara Bridge

Tatara Bridge is located on the connecting line between Honshu Island and Shikoku Island in Japan. It was the super-large cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in the world. Tatara Bridge was originally planned as a suspension bridge, but in 1989 the bridge was changed to a cable-stayed bridge. The reason was that we got huge anchorages to the suspension bridge, which would reduce the environmental impact in the area.

This cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 890m is like a giant blue dragon, which will span the beautiful Otter and connect highway traffic between Hiroshima City in Honshu and Matsuyama City in Shikoku. The bridge has four lanes with dedicated pedestrian and bicycle lanes and is part of Nishiseto Expressway, also known as Shimanami Kaido.

Dimensions of the Tatara Bridge

Tatara Bridge is the second-longest cable-stayed bridge in the world today, with a total length of 1,480 meters. The tallest bridge tower is a 224-meter steel tower, with a main span of 890 meters, and the side spans on both sides of the bridge are 170 meters and 270 meters. The full width of the bridge deck is 30.6 meters, the two-way four-lane is 20 meters wide, and the bicycle lane and sidewalk (set on the outside of the stay cable) are 2.5 meters wide.

Final Words

Tatara Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Seto Inland Sea. The connection is a series of roads and bridges and is one of the three routes connecting the islands of Honshu and Shikoku. Japan is a country with many typhoons and earthquakes. Therefore, the Tatara Bridge meets the high wind and earthquake resistance design requirements, enough to resist the storm of about 52m/s and the largest earthquake. Tatara Bridge formed a sister bridge alliance with Normandy Bridge in France, the third longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.
