Steel Beam Sizes report
Steel beams are one of the most common building materials in our daily life. Crane beams and working platform beams in workshops, floor beams in multi-story buildings, purlins in roof structures, etc., can all be constructed of steel beams.
Steel beam sections such as H-I-U are the supporting frame of all modern civil and industrial building structures. The size of the steel beam section must be determined by calculation and meet the three main requirements of strength, overall stability, and stiffness to ensure the safety of the steel beam in use.
Steel beams offer excellent support in load-bearing applications, particularly those requiring welding, bolting, or riveting, such as construction supports in commercial and residential projects and cargo trailer manufacturing. The following post discusses the standard steel beam sizes.
Steel Beam Size Guide
There is a huge variety of steel beam sizes, which can be sourced worldwide. Engineering standards define the different types and sizes of steel structurals. The specifications of the steel beam can be expressed by the main outline size (mm) of its section, that is, height (h) × width (b) × thickness (d) in millimeters. The model can also express the specification of the steel beam, and the model indicates the number of centimeters in height. For example, the model of I-beam with a height of 160mm is Ⅰ16#.
Steel Beam Types
- IPE stainless steel beams: It is also known as "I-sections." The I-beam is the universal and most common profile in the family of stainless steel beams.
- H stainless steel beams: There are three types: light, intermediate and heavy H beams, respectively codified as HEA, HEB and HEM. H-beams have a higher moment of inertia compared to the slender I-beams. Due to their enlarged flange width and thickness, they are “stronger” than I-beams.
- S-beam is a very common American beam type for construction in corrosive environments.
- W-beams, also known as wide flange beams, are the American counterparts of the European H-beams. They have been designed for heavy loads and find applications where the structural properties of S-beams will not reach the demanded values.
Wide Flange Beam Size Chart
Wide flange beam sizes are designated by the letter W, followed by the depth in inches and pounds per foot. Thus W12 × 19 represents a wide flange beam with a depth of 12 inches and a nominal weight of 19 pounds per foot.

Conclusion
The size of steel beams chosen in residential and commercial construction projects is critical to the integrity of the structure used to build. The most common type of steel beam used in construction is the I-beam, also known as an H-beam or W-beam. I-shaped beams are effective at carrying bending and shear weight across their centers. It’s easy to select the correct size I-beam for your project when you know the load, or weight, that you need the I-beam to bear.
