Standard Door Size Guide
The standard door width and height can vary since there are various sizes and types of doors. But the standard typical US door size is 36" in width and 80" in height. Other very easy-to-find widths are 30 and 32 inches. Keep in mind that when measuring the width and height, the measurement reflects only the door panel alone, not the frame.
Common Door Types
All the following sizes are only for reference, and keep in mind that custom door sizes can be very different.
- Standard Interior Door
Interior doors are any of the doors that are inside your house. International Residential Code sets the minimum height and weight requirements for interior doors. Width for most standard interior doors can range between 28 and 32 inches; height should reach at least 80 inches, although some codes allow for 78-inch doors. Doors with a height of 80 inches are 6 foot, 8 inches in UK size, which is why standard interior doors are known as "6/8 doors."
- Standard Exterior Door
There is no doubt that exterior doors are much larger than interior ones; the standard width is 36 inches, the height of the exterior door should reach 80 inches minimum and can go up to 96 inches.
- Sliding Glass Door
Sliding glass doors are usually fixed at the height of 80 inches tall, but the width can vary depending on where you will install the door and how big the door opening is. The width of a sliding door can range from 60 to 72 inches, and there are many options available. Builders often create door frame areas in standard sizes so that a replacement would be easier to find.
- French Door
French doors are generally sold as a pair, and they can come in many different sizes. It is essential to measure and get an accurate size. The most common door is between 30 and 72 inches wide.
- Closet Doors
Closet doors are often smaller than both entry or interior doors are. Closet doors in older houses could be only18 inches. However, newer builds often have a wider width of about 30 inches, and closet doors could go up to 96 inches in height.

How To Measure For the Right Door Size
When you choose a new replacement door, you must always base your measurements on the door frame. Another aspect to keep in mind when recording door measurements is the way the door opens. Stand in front of the door so that it opens away from you, and left side hinges mean the door is left-hand open away, whereas right side hinges mean the door is right-hand open away.
Step 1 Measure The Width
Place a tape measure along with your door from the left corner to the right corner, and record this measurement. It is essential to measure in more than one spot, including the top, middle, and the bottom of the rough opening, just in case the door is not perfectly rectangular. If the width measurement varies, use the largest figure.
Door widths of 30 inches (76 cm), 32 inches (81 cm), and 36 inches (91 cm) are the most common.
Step 2 Determine The Height
Run your tape measure along with your door from the top corner to the bottom corner. Once again, it is wise to measure in more than one spot on the door and record the number of the longest length, just in case it is not a perfect rectangle.
The most common height for US doors is 80 inches (200 cm). The standard UK height of doors is most commonly 6'6"(1981mm), but some may also be 2040mm.
Step 3 Find Out The Thickness
Hold a tape measure to the edge of the door and measure the edge on the door frame. These numbers should be close to the same. The most common thickness is 1.75 inches (4.4 cm).
I hope this article could make finding a perfect door easier. With just a little bit of effort, you can find and install gorgeous doors that make a statement in and around your home. Are you ready to install new doors in your home? Refer to the above sizes and measure your door correctly.
