Spinosaurus Size report

Sci-fi dinosaurMany people have seen the classic Jurassic movie series and more or less know about Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptor, Pterosaur, Brachiosaurus, etc. The most impressive of them should be Tyrannosaurus Rex. However, in the movie, Tyrannosaurus Rex was killed by Spinosaurus, so dinosaur fans debated which was the "strongest overlord in prehistory" over the years.

Spinosaurus is a famous giant carnivorous dinosaur. It lived from about 112 million years ago to 93 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Its distribution range includes northern Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Niger, Northeastern Brazil, and South America.

The fossils of Spinosaurus were first discovered in Egypt in 1912 by the German paleontologist Ernst Stromer and were described and named in 1915. The original specimen was destroyed during World War II. After the 21st century, paleontologists discovered more fossils of the body parts of Spinosaurus, and related research-based on fossils made the image of this huge dinosaur gradually clear.

Spinosaurus Size and Description

Spinosaurus goes down in the record books as the largest carnivorous dinosaur to be discovered to date. Perhaps one of the most characteristic features of Spinosaurus is the great sail that jutted from its back and added to this carnivore's height. This sail is believed to have played a role in thermoregulation. Spinosaurus has freshwater aquatic animal feet that can adapt to the characteristics of the marine environment. It is also the longest known theropod dinosaur. Spinosaurus possessed a long, narrow skull resembling that of a crocodile, and its teeth were straight and conical; all of these features are adaptations for piscivory.

Spinosaurus was a giant predator on both land and water, similar to the crocodile; fossils prove that the Spinosaurus was larger than the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Let's take a look at just how enormous this prehistoric beast was.

Spinosaurus Average Size

Spinosaurus, longer and heavier than Tyrannosaurus, is the largest known carnivorous dinosaur.

  • Spinosaurus had a body length of 49'-51' (15-15.6 m) from the mouth to the tail, and it possessed a skull 1.75 meters (roughly 6 feet) long.
  • A head height of 16.5' (5 m), an overall spine height of 21.5' (6.5 m), and a width of 5.7' (1.7 m).
  • Estimates of Spinosaurus' weight vary considerably but it is believed to have weighed in at between 12,000–20,000 kg (13–22 tons).

Environment & Habitat

The Spinosaurus fossils that have been discovered tell us a lot of interesting facts. The African coast, where Spinosaurus lived in the Cretaceous, was largely equatorial, and the climate was hot and humid. By the Cretaceous, Africa and South America were separated by the South Atlantic Ocean. Egypt was suitable habitat for Spinosaurus. Its coastlines, tidal flats, and fish channels would have been lined with mangrove forests. Large predators competed for food, and seasonal changes may have influenced diet.

Extinction

The extinction of Spinosaurus would have been a different set of events. As its environment dried up during a climate change, the dwindling habitat would have reduced prey and increased competitive pressures among other large predators. We know that Spinosaurus may have been too specialized for aquatic habitat. A loss of the habitat would have devastated its population largely.

Spinosaurus has been featured in popular dinosaur books for a long time, but there is not enough information on Spinosaurus to describe Spinosaurus wholly and correctly. You must visit those amazing and huge Spinosaurus fossils and skeletons if you have the chance.
