Pickleball is also a low-cost sport, played in many stadiums, parks, community centers, schools, and sports clubs. Have you ever played pickleball? The following article briefly explained pickleball history and pickleball court sizes, and some people will need the details if they want to build a court at home.

Pickleball History

It was another rainy day on Bainbridge Island in Seattle in 1965. Three neighbors were having a family gathering. Three American dads, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, created this game for boring children. They referenced the characteristics and rules of tennis, badminton, and table tennis and formulated the preliminary rules for pickleball. This novel, easy and fun sport became more and more popular all over the United States. In 1976, the first known pickleball tournament was held.

Pickleball is a relatively new sport, and it has since evolved and spread to Canada and many European and Asian countries. Initially, this new sport did not have a name. One of the inventors, Barney Mccallum, had a cute puppy Pickle. Since then, this new ball sport has had an interesting and memorable name, pickleball. What's more interesting is that some pickleball games in the United States are awarded a bottle of pickled cucumbers.

Pickleball Court Size Guide

Pickleball is so popular because people of all ages can play it. It is particularly popular with older players because it helps cardiovascular exercise, and the risk of injury is small. The Peak Field is smaller than a tennis court, so players do not have that wide coverage area. The ball is also much lighter than tennis, making it easier for people of all levels to play.

Pickleball pulls ideas from both badminton and tennis. Essential equipment includes a pickleball net, court, paddles, and a ball. Pickleball courts are rectangular areas with various lines sectioning them into different parts. They can be indoor or outdoor and similar to courts used for tennis and badminton. Understanding the setup of a pickleball court is critical to understanding the game's rules. Let's get started.

Standard Pickleball Court Dimensions

  1. A pickleball court measures 44 feet long and 20 feet wide (inclusive of lines) for both singles and doubles play, the same overall size as a doubles badminton court.
  2. The net height is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches tall in the middle.
  3. A pickleball court is striped with right and left service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net referred to as the kitchen.
  4. The full court (including out-of-bounds areas) measures at least 24 feet x 54 feet. If space permits, a 30' x 60' space is considered an ideal size.
  5. Pickleball lines are 2 inches in width and white. The width of the lines is included as part of that overall measurement.

Pickleball Court Diagram

Pickleball lines like sidelines, baselines, and centerlines help visibly divide the court into its 3 main sections. The net divides it horizontally in half, and each half is identical. The layout of the pickleball court is broken down into 3 main parts:

  • The non-volley zone: The first area is a non-volley zone, often called the "Kitchen," which includes the space from the non-volley line (located 7 feet from the net).
  • The service areas: These areas are 10 feet by 15 feet. The left service area consists of the left half of the court behind the non-volley line, and the right service area consists of the right half of the court behind the non-volley line.

If you are making your pickleball court, it can be constructed specifically for pickleball or converted using existing tennis or badminton courts.
