The Philips Stadium, also known as PSV Stadion, is adjacent to Philipsdorp and in the town of Strijp, not far from the center of Eindhoven. The Philips Stadium was officially opened on August 31, 1913. Initially, the stadium did not reach its current capacity. In 1933, the stadium could hold 3,000 spectators. In 1941, the stands were expanded to accommodate 18,000 spectators.
The spectator capacity has continuously increased with several modernizations and expansions. The stadium was almost entirely rebuilt between 1969 and 1977, resulting in a completely covered stadium with a capacity of 26,500. The new main stand was the last to be completed in 1977; in the next six years, works continued with the reconstruction of the two stands at the ends and finally with the other side of the stadium.
