Peterbald cat is a famous breed native to Russia. Many people mistakenly believe that Peterbald cats are hairless like Canadian Hairless cats; however, Peterbald cats' hair is very fine and close to the skin. In 1998, Peterbald came to the United States for the first time from Russia. Peterbald cats are oriental graceful cats, although they are not truly hairless.
It was originally bred as a Sphynx, but it was discovered that this cat breed was completely different from the Sphynx, and the name was changed to Don Hairless. In 1993, a brown mackerel tabby Don Hairless was mated with a female Oriental Shorthair cat; their descendants are Oriental hairless cats called Peterbald.

Peterbald Cat Size And Appearance
The head of Peterbald cat is wedge-shaped; the ears are large with pointed tips, and its almond-shaped eyes are mostly golden yellow. The body is slender, and the tail is long and thin. Peterbald cats may be of any color. During the first two years of life, Peterbald cat may undergo a period of hair loss again and again. Peterbald cats are considered a hairless cat breed; they lack a coat to shed or groom. Like other breeds of hairless cats, Peterbald cat must be kept indoors at a constant temperature and bathed regularly to wash off a lot of oil from its skin.
Coat Variations
Though its name may make you think that Peterbald is always bald and beautiful, Peterbald cat coats are five different variations:
- Bald — completely without hair, whiskers, or eyebrows and slightly sticky to the touch
- Flock— 90 percent hairless with no sticky touch and a feel like chamois leather
- Velour — 70 percent hairless with a slight coat (up to 1mm in length)
- Brush — unique to the breed, feeling a bit like felt and consisting of wiry hair that’s up to 5mm long
- Straight — a short coat with normal whiskers.

Peterbald cats tend to be medium in size; males are larger than females. A fully grown Peterbald cat might weigh between 6-10 pounds or more and range in height anywhere from about 8-12 inches; the body length is up to 16 inches without the tail.
