It was completed and opened on May 17, 1953; Stadio Olimpico served as the centerpiece stadium for the 1960 Olympics. All terraces were converted into seats, resulting in a capacity of 53,000 seats. During the Games, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics competitions. An almost completely new stadium was built in 1990.
