Oldenburger Horse Size report

The Oldenburger is a warmblood breed native to Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, and is the tallest and heaviest of the German warmblood breeds. The modern Oldenburg horse is a tall sporting horse with a good gait and jumping ability. In the 17th century, the horses of the Oldenburg region may have been small and ordinary but strong enough to take the heavy work or work as warhorses.

In the 1820s, strict stallion inspections are mandatory under state regulation. These processes allow breeders to mold horses quickly for the market. Oldenburg horses became fashionable, and high-legged carriage horses were exported far and wide. A large number of thoroughbreds were mix-bred to improve the genes of Oldenburg horses.

The Oldenburger is purposefully bred as a large horse. It must have power, elasticity, and a strong frame, with docile character and stability; Oldenburger is ideal for equestrian show jumping and three-day eventing. It is the breeding goal of almost all athletic horses in the world.

Oldenburger Size and Appearance

The Oldenburger has a large head with long ears and a somewhat raised nose profile. The neck is long and beautifully lined. The shoulders are long and well sloping. The shoulder and back must be of sufficient length and shape for the saddle to sit correctly with the rider. Oldenburg horses have muscular backs and waists. The legs are muscular and slender, the joints well formed, and the bones and hoofs are well developed. Oldenburg horses are most commonly black, brown, bay, or grey.

The characteristics of the modern Oldenburger can be identified by the "O" on the left rump and the "crown" branding. Below the logo are the last two digits of the horse's number. Official branding can only be put on Oldenburgers until they are two years old. A digital chip in the neck is another way to identify Oldenburg horses.

Final Words

The Oldenburg Horse is a large, heavyweight hunter horse with Thoroughbred bloodlines. Although the Oldenburger is not necessarily stronger or harder-working than other warm-blooded horses, its strength, intelligence, longevity, tallness, and long, steady gait have always made it popular. Oldenburg horses are famous for their extreme elegance, lofty height, and superior athletic ability. Oldenburg horses excel in show jumping, three-day eventing, and dressage events, only outperformed by Hannover horses and Dutch warmbloods.
