Ob River Size report

The Ob River is the third largest river in Russia and belongs to the Arctic Ocean water system. The upper reaches originate from the Altai Mountains, and after the source flows to the northwest, it crosses the West Siberian Plain and flows into the Ob Bay of the Kara Sea in the Arctic Ocean. The Gulf of Ob is a nearly 1,000-meter-long narrow bay connecting the Kara Sea in the Arctic Ocean, and it is also the longest estuary in the world.

The Ob River Basin is the main transportation channel of Western Siberia, with numerous tributaries and abundant water. Each year, the upstream can be navigable for about 190 days, and the downstream can be navigable for about 150 days. Its tributary, the Irtysh River, is the only river in China that flows into the Arctic Ocean.

One of the greatest rivers of Asia, it is a major transportation artery, crossing territory at the heart of Russia that is extraordinarily varied in its physical environment and population. You will learn more about the Ob River in the following post.

Ob River Introduction

The Ob River has two sources: the Katong River, which originates from the glacier at the southern foot of the Belukha Mountains in the Altai Mountains, and the Biya River, which forms from the Teletskoye Lake in the Altai Mountains. The Ob River, which is of great economic importance to Russia, arises at the confluence of its headwaters, the Biya and Katun Rivers in the Altai Mountains. It flows north and west across western Siberia in a twisting diagonal from its sources in the Altai Mountains to its outlet through the Gulf of Ob into the Kara Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The river passes primarily through Russian territories, though many of its tributaries drain land areas in neighboring China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.

Length

The Ob River, the seventh longest river in the world, flows for a distance of 3,650 kilometers in the Western Siberia region of the Russian Federation. The Biya River and the Katong River originating from the Altai Mountains converge in the southwest of Bisk in the Altai Krai to form the Ob River. If the Katong River is used as the source, the Ob River has a total length of 4,315 kilometers. If the source of the Irtysh River is calculated, the total length is 5,410 kilometers, and the drainage area is 2.973 million square kilometers.

Tributaries

The Ob River has many tributaries, and there are more than 150,000 large and small tributaries in the basin. There are more than 1,900 rivers in the basin, with a total length of about 180,242 kilometers. The tributaries of the Ob are divided into two categories, the Left Tributaries and the Right Tributaries. Left bank tributaries drain about 70% of the whole basin.

Hydrological features

The Ob River Basin is located between 47°-68° north latitude and 63°-87° east longitude. It belongs to the Russian West Siberia Plain, with a small drop, slow river water potential, and curved riverbed. The spring flood in the upper Ob River snows from early April to July, but the autumn rain increases water levels in September-October. There is a continuous high-water period from mid-April to early May in the middle and lower reaches until the ice cream starts.

In autumn, the ice floes lasted from the end of October to November, and the whole river was frozen. The upstream was frozen for about 150 days, and the downstream was frozen for about 220 days. The thawing period is longer than the freezing period, lasting from the end of April (upstream) to May. Downstream, spring drift ice often co-occurs with large ice jams.

Final Words

The Ob River is a major transportation artery, passing through the Russian hinterland where the natural environment and national character are very different. Although the river's lower reaches are mostly remote, the basin it runs through is an area of great economic potential. The Ob River is rich in hydropower and natural resources. In the Ob River Basin, industry and agriculture have been greatly developed.
