Before learning basketball skills, you should focus on knowing the basketball court. If you finally decide to install a basketball hoop in your backyard to complete your dream home, you will need to consider what size backboard you will need for your new basketball court. The article focus on the details of NBA backboard size.
NBA Backboard Size Guide
Backboard sizes vary in width from 48" wide up to 72", but for the sake of regular gameplay, we recommend choosing a backboard no smaller than 54" wide. The decision of the backboard size is typically based on playing area size. The closer you can get to having a full-sized 72" wide backboard, the more realistic and professional play you will have. According to FIBA regulations, the standard backboard height is 2.90 m (114"), and the standard rim height is 3.05 m (120"). NBA and CBA obey the same measurements as the FIBA standard backboard size.
NBA Backboard Dimensions
- The backboard should be a rectangle measuring 0.03 m thick, 72" (1.82 m) horizontally, and 48" (1.21 m) vertically. The lower edge of the board is 114" (2.90 m) tall from the ground. The front surface shall be flat and transparent.
- A transparent backboard should be marked with a 2" white rectangle centered behind the rectangle shall have outside dimensions of 24" (61 cm) horizontally and 18" (45.7 cm) vertically.
NBA backboards must contain four strips of red LED lights, synchronized with the game clock, outlining the inside of the four sides of the backboard to indicate the expiration of time and one strip of amber LED light to indicate the expiration shot clock. The commonly used materials for basketball backboards are tempered glass backboards, SMC backboards, glass fiber reinforced plastic backboards, and plexiglass boards.
NBA Basket Details
- Each basket should consist of an NBA-approved metal safety rim 18" in inside diameter with a white cord net. The cord of the net shall not be less than 30 threads nor more than 120 threads.
- Each basket rim shall be securely attached to the backboard with its upper edge 10' (3.05 m) above and parallel to the floor and equidistant from the vertical edges of the board.
Fan-Shaped Backboard Dimensions
Fan-shaped basketball backboards are non-regulation backboards that are typically found on casual courts at playgrounds or indoor side courts. They are smaller than rectangular regulation backboards and have widths of 54" (137.2 cm) and heights of 33" (83.8 cm).
Conclusion
The dimension requirements listed by the NBA, NCAA, and High School are all the same. The regulation size for a basketball backboard is 48" long x 72" wide. However, a 42" long backboard is also permissible. The rules governing the size of a backboard are not as stringent at the high school level. Variable dimensions are permitted if the local governing body approves them.
