Mount Makalu Height report

Makalu is located at 87°05′20″ east longitude and 27°53′23″ north latitude. It belongs to the Himalayas and is the fifth-highest mount in the world. It is 19.5 kilometers away from Mount Everest in the northwest. The northwest-southeast ridge bounds Makalu, the north is in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and the south is in Nepal.

The name "Makalu" comes from the Sanskrit word Maha-Kala, which represents great evil, and is also another name for the god Shiva in Hinduism. Makalu, which means "black giant mount" in Tibetan, describes its black mountain rocks exposed under strong winds. Makalu Mount is covered with thick ice and snow all year round, and there are huge glaciers in the slopes and valleys, and ice avalanches and avalanches are frequent.

On May 15, 1955, nine members of the French mountaineering team reached the summit for the first time. On February 9, 2009, Italian Simone Moro and his Kazakh partner Denis Urubko successfully climbed to the top of Makalu along the conventional route, realizing the first climbing in winter.

Mount Makalu Height and Decription

Mount Makalu is close to Mount Everest in Nepal, 19 kilometers southeast of the world's tallest mountain. Makalu is an isolated mount in the shape of a quadrangular pyramid. Although this mountain is less famous than Mount Everest, it is a very challenging place to climb. The isolated mountain straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet, an area currently ruled by China. Makalu has five main ridges. The ridges are covered with thick snow and ice, and the valleys have huge glaciers. The glaciers are full of jagged cliffs and cracks, and ice avalanches are also very frequent, so climbing Makalu is extremely difficult.

Measurements of Makalu

The summit of Makalu is 8,481 meters above sea level, the fifth-highest mount in the world. Makalu is a double peak. The subsidiary peak rising just north of the main peak connected by a saddle is called Chomolonzo, with a height of 7,818 meters. It can be measured that the terrain prominence of Makalu is 2,386 meters.

Climate

The climate on Makalu is generally similar to that on Everest. The winter half of the year is dry and windy. From mid-November to mid-February of the following year, due to the strong northwest cold current, the average temperature is between -40°C and -50°C, and the maximum wind speed can reach 90 m/s. The rainy season is every year from the beginning of June to mid-September. The heavy rain brought by the strong southeast monsoon causes frequent ice avalanches and avalanches, resulting in a harsh climate where the mountains are filled with clouds and fog, and the ice and snow are rampant.

Only from the end of April to the end of May, or from September to October, is the transition season between the wind season and the rainy season, and there are often three or four times of good weather lasting 2-5 days, which is an excellent time for mountaineering activities.

Ecosystem

Makalu is located within Nepal's Makalu Barun National Park and Reserve, a 580-square-mile park that protects pristine ecosystems from tropical rainforest to alpine tundra above 13,000 feet. The remote Barron Valley region below Makalu is particularly important and is managed as a strict nature reserve to preserve its unique qualities and ecosystems. The park includes an extraordinary diversity of flora. Botanists have identified 3,128 species of flowering plants, including 25 species of rhododendrons. It is also the home for countless animals, with more than 440 species of birds and 88 species of mammals, including red pandas, snow leopards, and the rare Asian golden cat.

Final Words

Makalu looks like a perfect pyramid with sharp ridges; at the bottom, there is a beautiful valley known as the Makalu-Barun Valley. The mountains are known for their towering waterfalls, and deep gorges with rare plants and animals found only in this region. It is considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb due to the combination of rock and ice. The best climbing season in the Himalayas, including Makalu, is spring, and the good weather cycle lasts for a long time, usually about two weeks.
