Mount Gasherbrum Height report

Gasherbrum, located in the Karakoram Mountains at the junction of Xinjiang, China, and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, near 35°43′ north latitude and 76°42′ east longitude, is the general name of a group of peaks. It is adjacent to K2, the second-highest peak in the world in the north.

Gasherbrum I peak was originally called K5, and Gasherbrum II is K4. When the British second lieutenant (T.G. Montgomerie) inspected the Karakoram Mountains for the first time in 1856, he marked five main peaks of the mountain range from west to east with "K" at the beginning. Because Gashurbrum is far away and hard to find, it is also called "Hidden Peak."

In 1956, the Austrian mountaineering team reached the summit of Gasherbrum II for the first time. In 1958, an eight-person American mountaineering team led by Nich Clinch climbed the Gasherbrum I peak for the first time. The climbers were Schoening and Andy Kaufman. The following post will introduce more facts about Mount Gasherbrum.

Gasherbrum Height and Description

Gasherbrum refers to the most remote group of peaks in the Karakoram; they hide deep at the northwest end of the 36-mile-long Baltoro glacier. Gasherbrum means "beautiful mountain" in Balti; some people think that Gasherbrum means "shining wall," which is another nickname for Gasherbrum IV. The west wall of the Gasherbrum Mountains will reflect a beautiful and spectacular scene under the setting sun when the weather is clear. The peaks form a small circle around the South Gasherbrum Glacier. The peaks are steep pyramid-shaped rock masses composed of rugged ridges, steps, and towering rock walls. The Gasherbrum I and II on the edge of the Karakoram Mountains are two of the world's 14 peaks with an altitude of more than 8,000 meters; they are the 11th and 13th peaks in the world, respectively.

Measurements of Gasherbrum

Gasherbrum is a group of six peaks, including Gasherbrum I (8,080m meters), Gasherbrum Ⅱ (8,035 meters), Gasherbrum III (7,952 meters), Gasherbrum IV (7,925 meters), Gasherbrum V (7,147 meters), Gasherbrum VI (6,979 meters), and others. Among them, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II are the eleventh- and thirteenth-highest peaks in the world, respectively. Gasherbrum II Peak is about 5.3 kilometers away from Gasherbrum I. The topographical prominence of Gasherbrum I and II are 2,155 and 1,524 meters.

Climate

Gasherbrum is not only dangerous terrain but also a very harsh climate. From May to September every year, the southwest monsoon brings warm and humid air, which is the rainy season in this area. A strong westerly wind blows from mid-September to mid-April of the following year, bringing a harsh winter. The lowest temperature at the top of the peak can reach -50°C, and the maximum wind speed can reach more than 25 m/s, a restricted climate zone for mountaineering.

Conclusion

Gasherbrum I and II are deep in the hinterland of the Karakorum Mountains, are extremely difficult to climb, and the death rate is high, which has made countless climbers turn pale. At the same time, its unparalleled and magnificent scenery deeply attracts mountain lovers worldwide. From May to September, due to rising temperature, snowmelt, and precipitation, the water level in the valley often rises sharply, making it difficult to enter the mountain. Therefore, the best time for mountaineering is from May to early June; from July to September, the temperature on the top of the mountain is slightly higher, and the good weather lasts longer, which is a good time to climb to the top.
