Size and Story of Mapo Bridge

The Mapo Bridge was started in February 1968 and completed in May 1970. It was named "Seoul Bridge" when it was completed and was renamed "Mapo Bridge" in 1984. This steel bridge is not known for its long length or complicated structures but continuous suicides. It is not only an important traffic passage connecting the two areas as a spot of beauty but has also been known as one of the most famous suicide spots in Seoul.

On June 30, 2012, Samsung Life Insurance and the City of Seoul stated that by holding the "Bridge of Life" project. Slogans and photos are set up on the railings of the Mapo Bridge to remind people to cherish their life and look forward to the better things. A year later, however, the number of people who committed suicide on the Mapo Bridge increased sixfold yearly. The "suicide prevention railing" on Mapo Bridge has been criticized for a long time, and many people think that it may promote suicide. In 2019, the Seoul Metropolitan Government decided to remove these words, and the famous "suicide prevention slogan" became history.

Dimensions of Mapo Bridge

The Mapo Bridge is 1,470 meters long, 10 meters high, and 25 meters wide, with six lanes. Before 1984, it was called Seoul Bridge. It is a 60-foot drop from the guardrails of the Mapo Bridge into the Han River. That is probably not high enough to die, but that hasn't stopped many people from trying.
