Lake Geneva Size report

Lake Geneva (French: Lac Léman) is the largest of the Alpine lakes, covering 60% in Switzerland and 40% in France. Lake Geneva is formed by the Rhone Glacier and is the largest alpine dammed lake in the world. After the Rhone Glacier dissolves, the Rhone River is formed, which is the water source of Lake Geneva.

The lake's first name since the Roman Empire was recorded was Lacus Lemannus. In the Middle Ages, it evolved under different names: Lacus Lausonius, Lacus Losanetes, and Lac de Genève. In the eighteenth century, the name of Lac Léman began to spread in France.

The lake area has a mild climate and minimal temperature changes all year round, making it a world-renowned holiday destination. Lake Geneva is huge, with paddle boats, steamboats, and ferries regularly passing through the 582-square-kilometer lake area. You will learn more about Lake Geneva in the following post.

Lake Geneva Introduction

Lake Geneva is a moraine lake. It is said that during the Quaternary Ice Age, the Rhône River, which originated in the Alps, was blocked by moraine material in the Ecluse region, so it converged into a lake. A total of 41 rivers and 299 glaciers feed into Lake Geneva, the largest of which is the Rhone, which flows from the easternmost part of the lake at 180 cubic meters per second. Crescent in shape, the lake is formed by the Rhone River, which enters it at the east end between Villeneuve, Switzerland, and Saint-Gingolph, France, and leaves it at the west end through the city of Geneva.

The most striking feature of Lake Geneva is a huge artificial fountain. This artificial fountain was originally built in 1891 when the height of the jet was only 90 meters. It is powered by two sets of submerged water pumps with a total weight of 16 tons, driven by a 500-kilowatt 2,400-volt engine at 1,500 revolutions per minute. Today, the height of the fountain's water column can reach 140 meters when there is no wind.

Lake Geneva is centered on the Mont Blanc Bridge, with many parks along the lake. Geneva and Lausanne are the largest lakeside cities, and there are numerous resorts, including Montreux and Vevey in Switzerland and Thonon-Les-Bains and Évian-Les-Bains in France. Since ancient times, many famous writers and great poets have sung it. Henry James called it a "surprisingly blue lake"; Byron likened it to a crystal mirror; Balzac said it was "a synonym for love."
