Kimono Size report

kimono modelThe kimono is the traditional national costume of Japan. The origin of the kimono can be traced back to the 3rd century AD. In the Nara era, Japan sent envoys to China and received many dazzling court clothes.

The Japanese vividly express their sense of art and culture in their kimono design. In Japan, when attending adult ceremonies, weddings, funerals, festivals, banquets, cultural performances, and celebrating traditional festivals, Japanese people will wear dignified kimonos to participate.

With the integration of world cultures, kimono design has gradually incorporated more modern fashion elements. There is more than one way to wear a kimono. We have seen some fantastic "non-traditional" styles produced by Japanese kimono fashion magazines, Instagram celebrities, and fashion brands. The following article will introduce more details about kimono design and sizing guide.

Kimono Sizing Guide

When buying a kimono or yukata, you do not need to worry about finding the right size. Women's kimonos usually come in only one size, which will probably be longer and wider than you need. They are adjusted to the right size by folding them at the waist. And sleeves tend to be worn shorter than you may be used to; it will be between the wrist and elbow.

Kimono length measurements refer to the length of the gown from the lower collar to the hem. If you prefer your robe worn above the ankle, it may be best to choose one size down the gown.

Kimono Parts' Measurements

  • Height (mitake): Measure your height from the nape of your neck to your heel. The mitake of the kimono is the length of the back middle seam. If you would like ohashori, add 20-30 cm to your mitake measurement, and you will be in a reasonable range.
  • Sleeve Drop (sodetake): The sleeve drop is the length of the sleeve measured if you hold your arm straight out and measure from your wrist to the bottom of the sleeve. Most kimonos are going to have a reasonably similar sleeve drop. A good rule of thumb is your sleeve drop should be around your height in centimeters divided by 3.
  • Middle Back to Wrist (Yuki): This measurement starts at the middle of your spine, around the nape of your neck. Let your arm hang to the side and place the tape measure along the slope of your shoulder, and then angle it down to match the length of your arm to your wrist. It is called the Yuki, and it helps to ensure that the sleeve of the kimono is not too short along your arm.
  • Hemline (Okumi + Marhaba + Ushirohaba): When custom kimono, the width of the Marhaba (front body panel), Ushirohaba (back body panel), and Okumi are calculated from your body measurements. But for most kimonos, the easiest way to get these measurements is to measure the width of the entire hemline.

How to Find The right Kimono Size

Here are some hints about the sizing of yukata kimonos, Japanese kimonos. The main difference between yukata kimonos or Japanese kimonos and Western-style clothing is that you don’t buy the size that fits you. Still, after purchasing the kimono, you should adjust the sizing by using a belt. That’s why kimonos generally only come in one size, and they are all long and wide.

Check the Length

If you traditionally try to wear a kimono, you would normally choose a garment that seems too long for you. Any kimono that is either longer than your height, or the same as your height, or up to 10" (25cm) shorter than your height. The excess fabric should be folded over at the waist. If the kimono is around 12" (30cm) shorter than your height you can wear it without any fold, which is the way that men traditionally wear kimono, and also becoming a popular modern take on wearing kimono for young women.

Check the Width

A kimono with a width that is at least 16" (40cm) greater than your hip size will fit perfectly. If the width of the kimono is not at least 10" (25cm) greater than your hip size, it will not close properly at the front.

Sleeves Length

You should see where the sleeves will fall on you, check the sleeve length but not sleeve height when trying it on. This length is measured from the spine at the base of the neck.
