Kayak Paddle Size Chart report

kayak sportKayak originated in the Eskimo tribe of Greenland in the 1860s. The word kayak means "man's ship" in Eskimo. This kind of boat was first made of whale skin and otter skin wrapped around the skeleton, and people rowed paddle to drive the kayak. Modern kayaks are primarily used for recreation and water sports, fishing, and travel.

A kayak is more of a "sports car" with fewer people and usually sails faster than a canoe, which is why they are favored in competitive and challenging water sports. A kayak usually has an enclosed deck that covers the top and interior of the boat to protect the paddlers.

A paddler usually sits on the underside of the hull with his legs stretched forward inside the kayak. Kayak paddlers typically use double-bladed paddles, and a single paddle does not provide efficient propulsion. Whether you are a first-time kayak or a pro, picking the right paddle for your kayak is critical.

Kayak Paddle Size Guide

Kayaking has a long history, and the sport's rules and norms have been gradually formed and perfected since the last century. In January 1924, the "International Canoe Association," abbreviated as I.R.K, was established in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. In 1936, at the 11th Olympic Games held in Berlin, canoeing was listed as an official Olympic sport.

A correctly sized kayak paddle can make all the difference while on the water. A kayak paddle is a two-blade paddle at both ends of the shaft. According to the different directions of blade deflection, there are left-turn paddles and right-turn paddles, and athletes can choose according to their habit of holding the paddle. The development of kayak paddles has changed rapidly in recent decades, as the rules do not have very strict uniformity on the size and shape of the kayak paddles. The paddles' weight, length, and blade shape are related to the athlete's height, paddling style, and different boat types.

The correct size is always the first factor, no matter what kayak paddle brand or model you buy. The two most important factors in choosing the right kayak paddle length are your kayak's width and your height. You can find recommended kayak paddle lengths for different boat widths and paddlers' heights in the table below.

How To choose the right Kayak Paddle Size

Choosing the right kayak paddle size is more of an art. When deciding on the perfect paddle size, you should select the correct paddle length, the type of paddle that best suits your paddling style, and the blade shape and shaft design. To select a kayak paddle, you need to consider four primary factors:

1. Paddle Length

Your boat width and your height determine your paddle length. A too-short paddle will have you hitting your hands on the sides of the kayak. It will add extra strain to your shoulders with a too-long paddle, which can be exhausting, and you may have less control over your kayak. Many people choose a shorter paddle style for playboating and freestyling. A longer paddle size is best used for river running and creeking. If you fall between two sizes, it's generally better to get the shorter one.

2. Blade Shape By Paddling Styles

Your paddle's blade size and shape affect its overall efficiency in the water. Your paddling style is the biggest factor when determining whether you should choose a short wide blade or a long skinny blade.

  • High-Angle: These high-angle paddlers typically use a shorter, wider blade and a paddle with a shorter shaft. Wider blades lend themselves to quick, powerful strokes that let you accelerate quickly.
  • Low-angle: Paddlers who use the long-angle paddling style more relaxed, cruising stroke often find that a paddle with a longer, thinner blade is the most energy-efficient.

3. Shaft Design

A bent shaft or feathered blades can also improve a paddle's effectiveness. Bent shaft paddles have a "kink" that minimizes joint fatigue by placing hands at a more comfortable angle while paddling. If you're changing from a straight kayak paddle to a bent paddle, spend at least a day adjusting your stroke technique. Feathered blades are not on the same plane; they are offset at an angle to each other, which reduces wind resistance on the blade that's out of the water.

4. Materials and Price

Lightweight materials improve performance, but their price is higher. Plastic or nylon blades are low-price, but they can crack and degrade when left in the sun. A fiberglass blade is more light than plastic, in the middle of the price range, these offer excellent performance and durability. If you are willing to pay more money for top performance, carbon fiber is the best choice, and they are genuinely ultralight and ultra-stiff.
