Judo Competition Area Size

According to the International Judo Federation, the competition area must be square and covered by a Tatamis or similar material. In the center of the competition area, 4 meters apart, the 24 cm long and 6 cm wide blue and white signs shall be marked, respectively, indicating the position of the competitors at the beginning and the end of the competition. The blue sign is on the right of the referee, and the white sign is on the left of the referee. A free zone, a minimum of 50cm, must be maintained around the entire competition area.

When using two or more adjoining competition areas, the shared safety area should be 4m. The platform is optional and is made of solid wood. It measures approximately 18m x 18m. When using a platform, it is recommended that the safety area be at least 4m wide around the competition area.

The Judo competition area covers a minimum area of ​​14m x 14m and a maximum of 16m x 16m, usually green in color. The total area is divided into two areas by a 1-meter-wide band called the danger zone. The inner zone, including the danger zone, is the contest area, and its minimum area is 8m x 8m, and the maximum is 10m x 10m. The outer zone is the safety area and is a minimum of 3m wide.
