Description of Hampden Bridge Size

The Hampton Bridge is a suspension bridge across the Kangaroo River in Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Irish-Australian civil engineer Ernest DeBarre to replace the original wooden bridge. The construction started in 1895 and was officially completed on May 19, 1898. The bridge was named after Henry Brand, 2nd Viscount Hampden, then Governor of New South Wales. The wooden bridge has a unique design with gothic Victorian sandstone towers that resembles an entrance to a medieval castle. The bridge is a single vehicular lane and features two narrow pedestrian walkways.

The bridge accompanied the Kangaroo Valley for over 100 years and witnessed the agricultural boom of that period. The Hampden Bridge is the last surviving wooden suspension bridge in Australia and the only surviving suspension bridge from the colonial period in New South Wales; and also the symbol of Kangaroo Valley today.
