Common Girth Measurements of Human Body

You can measure the circumference of any part of the body with a tape measure. Girth measurement of the human body is critical to making a garment. It is also important in the medical sector. Now I will discuss different girth measurements of the human body.

Head Girth

This measurement is essential for making or choosing a garment or hat that will flexibly fit the head. It also needs to make head covering apparel. It is the maximum circumference of the head when a soft tape measuring is located superior to the eyebrow and positioned at the back of the head. Make sure there are no ties or clips in the hair and that the ears are not included.

One study in the United States shows the average adult head circumference to be 55cm (21 3⁄4 ") in females and 57cm (22 1⁄2 ") in males. Another study conducted in the UK shows a slightly different result: the average female head size being 55.2 cm and the average male head size being 57.2 cm.

Neck Girth

• The base of the neck is where the curve starts at the bottom. The subject should keep the head up and look straight ahead when measuring the neck girth.
• Place the soft tape measuring comfortably around the base of the neck, and make sure the tape is not too tight or too loose.

Chest (Bust) Girth

It is a measurement of the widest circumference of the chest. The measurement is taken at the widest point of the chest, which is above the bust. You will need a flexible metal tape measure and pen suitable for marking the skin and following the chest circumference steps.

• The tape should pass under the arms, and the side should relax the arms after the tape is in position and the measurement taken at the end of a normal expiration.
• Ensure the soft measuring tape is not too tight or too loose and horizontal, particularly around the back.
• If possible, the heavy clothes should be removed to make sure the measuring tape is positioned correctly and to get the correct circumference.

Waist Girth

The most common girth measurements are taken around the midsection (waist and hip) and used to determine fat gain/loss. The girth is the widest point of a person’s abdominal area and is best measured with a tape measure to obtain the circumference of the waist.

Measurement is taken from the narrowest part of the torso that is halfway between the 12th rib and the iliac crest. The subject should stand comfortably erect with hands by the side and must not be contracting any muscles.

Hip Girth

It is a measurement of the fullest circumference of the hip, which is usually over the bottom. This measurement is used to make the garment flexible on the hip and not tear off when wearing.

Place the soft measuring tape at the fullest point of the hip, and make sure the subject is standing comfortably and the tape flat and horizontal to the floor, not too tight or too loose.

Thigh Girth

This measurement is taken by placing the tape around the thickest part of the thigh when subject stands with legs slightly parted. Weight must be equally distributed on both the legs.

1. Proximal or Upper Thigh Girth: About 1cm below the gluteal fold and horizontal to the long axis of the femur.
2. Mid Thigh: Measurement is taken from the inguinal crease to the proximal border of the patella.
3. Distal Thigh: It is measured from just proximal to femoral condyles.

Waist to Hip Ratio

These measurements determine the ratio of waist girth to hip girth, which is related to the risk of coronary heart disease. As an available interpretation, the higher the ratio, the higher the risk of developing or suffering from coronary heart disease. All the dates are only for reference.
