The stadium has undergone several renovations in the history of nearly a century of use. Fritz Walter Stadium was upgraded and remodeled again from 2002 to 2004 to welcome the 2006 World Cup in Germany, costing about 48.3 million euros. The new Fritz Walter stadium has expanded the southwestern two stands, installed advanced sound reinforcement equipment, a new floodlighting system, and a media center, and has been certified by UEFA as a four-star stadium. Kaiserslautern's new railway station was also opened in conjunction with the 2006 World Cup. The Fritz Walter Stadium hosted five matches during the 2006 World Cup.
