Door Frame Size report
The correct installation and selection of the door frame can ensure that the door has a longer running time. There technically is not a standard door frame size, unlike the standard sizes for doors. Door frames are slightly different in that they’re customised from building to building.
Door frames often come 762mm in width, and it covers the gap between the wall and the door on most standard doorways. The reason there is no a standard size for door frames is because the openings within a wall can vary quite often.
If you already have a door that is ready to install, you can figure out the door frame size by measuring its width and height, which can make sure you purchase the correct size door frame. Different buildings require different door frame sizes, and different manufacturers have slightly different standards. You only need to master the skills of how to measure and select the correct door frame size.
Door Frame Size Guide
The door frame size is generally wider than the door opening. The door frame post has a width between 2 to 4 inches. To make sure you purchase the correct size door frame, take the width measurement of the door and add 2-inches. For the height, add 2.5-inches to the size of the door. The following are some common door sizes.

How to get the right Door Fame size
If you are looking to purchase replacement doors and to keep the same frames, you will need to replicate the door thickness and the door opening size, so make sure to take this measurement with the following steps.
Measure door opening size
To determine your door opening width and height, you should measure at the top, middle, and bottom of the door opening. The error is controlled within 20mm.
- Place the tape measure on the inner side of the door frame on one side and measure to the other side. Measure in more than one location and use the smallest measurement as dimensions for the width.
- Measure the height from the floor (for interior doors) or threshold (for exterior doors) to the lower part of the door’s upper trim. For accurate height measurement, run the tape measure along the center, left, and right side of the door opening.
Measure the door frame thickness
The measurement of the door frame also needs to be measured at the top, middle and bottom to check whether the wall thickness is consistent. And use the largest dimension for the frame’s thickness. The thickness of the door frame should be no less than 80mm, or the support force will be not enough.
More tips
- Especially in older homes, the door might not fit in the frame. In such a case, you will get the most accurate measurements by measuring the jamb itself for the width, height, and thickness dimensions.
- Always take measurements from behind the door for accurate dimensions because the backside is usually a bit wider than the front side.
- Before buying a new door, be sure to check the swing or the direction the door opens.
