Corn Snake Size report

Corn snake (scientific name: Pantherophis guttatus) is a carnivorous reptile in the snake family. It gets the name because this snake often appears in cornfields. There are red or reddish-brown markings with black edges on its body and checkered markings with alternate shades of light on its abdomen. Corn snakes are usually red with orange saddle markings and come in various color variations, from fluorescent orange to gray, taupe, khaki, and purple.

Corn snakes are native to the southeastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico coast; they are found in the United States, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Virgin Islands. Corn snakes like to inhabit dry woodlands, swamps, farmland, and other places; most live alone, foraging at dusk and night.

Due to its tiny size, docile character, non-toxicity, and lifespan of about 20 years, the Corn snake has also become an ornamental pet snake. Every year, a certain number of corn snakes are caught and sold to the pet market, but fortunately, this has not affected the reproduction of its population for the time being. Corn snakes are not in danger of extinction.

Corn Snake Size and Appearance

The ever-changing colors and patterns are the most attractive places for corn snakes. Most corn snakes have more than one recessive gene, which makes them highly variable in color and pattern. Grey, taupe khaki, orange, etc., are also common. On these colors, there are red or russet markings bordered with black. There are thick and light checkered markings on the abdomen and straight stripes on the ventral side of the tail. Part gray individuals have a black checkered pattern on the abdomen.

Corn snakes are the most variable subspecies, with snakes in the same clutch having horizontal and vertical stripes. Various body color variations have been bred, such as albino, off-yellow, off-red, colorless, and vertical patterns. Healthy corn snakes flick their tongue frequently and have clear, bright eyes. Their skin should be smooth without blisters.

Living Habits And Reproduction

Corn snakes like to live alone, foraging at dusk and night and basking in the sun in the morning to regulate their body temperature. The hibernation period is from November to March of the next year. Corn snakes are generally docile. But when they feel threatened, especially in the wild, they may vibrate their tails like rattlesnakes as a defense mechanism. Like most snakes, corn snakes are unrivaled escapees. The fit of the cover is very important when preparing a home for it.

During the annual breeding season, a male snake can mate with several female snakes. The corn snake mates and breeds from March to May yearly, and the female snake lays 3 to 40 eggs each time. The eggshell of the snake eggs is white, and the incubation period is about 60 days. It hatches between July and September. The sex of the small snake is like that of the big Most reptiles depend on the temperature (high male and low female), sexual maturity is 2-3 years old, life span is 12-15 years, and the highest record is 23 years.

Home Care of Corn Snake

Corn snakes reach adult size in 2-3 years. As corn snakes grow, you'll need to expand their habitat. A 40-gallon terrarium or larger is recommended and requires a tank with a safety locking lid to prevent escapes. Reptiles cannot regulate their body temperature without an external source, so you need a good heating system for your corn snake. Corn snakes spend their days moving among leaf litter and undergrowth in the wild, so various botanical decorations such as twigs, plants, and ornaments in the tank can be beneficial in rekindling the snake's curiosity.
