Coconut Crab Descriptions

Coconut crabs are famous for their tender meat as food. However, due to the hunting by humans and the destruction of their natural habitats, coconut crabs are becoming more and more difficult to find in their habitats. Many governments have introduced strict protection measures over the decades, and various regions are also researching ways to farm coconut crabs artificially. The interesting thing is that although they are a type of crab, they have adapted to life on land and will drown if they stay in the water for too long. Physical Characteristics

The full-grown adult colors range from light violet to brown and deep purple. Young adults are brown, with black stripes on their legs. Coconut crabs have hard shells and 10 legs, with each pair of legs evolved to serve a specific purpose. They are especially good at climbing straight coconut trees with two strong and powerful claws. They can use their strong double claws to peel off the hard coconut shell and get their name from the coconut pulp inside.

Diet & Habitat

Adult coconut crabs are omnivorous scavengers, which means they eat pretty much anything they can find. Coconut crabs are generalist scavengers that feed on fallen fruit, carrion, and the shells of other crabs. Most of these creatures live on islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The largest known concentration of this species is on Christmas Island. They usually have no trouble finding their favorite food. Adult crabs are primarily terrestrial but will make their way into the water on rare occasions.

Breeding

Coconut crabs return to the sea during the breeding season, from May to September, especially in July and August. The female releases her ripe eggs in the sea, and their larvae remain in seawater until full-grown. Junior coconut crab buries itself in moist sand and transforms into a small adult. Unlike most other hermit crabs, junior coconut crabs use shells to protect their abdomens, and most of the daylight hours are passed in burrows up to about 0.6 meters deep, sometimes two crabs to a burrow.

Coconut crabs grow very slowly after each molting, usually in autumn and winter. Juvenile crabs molt about 2 to 3 times a year. As the individual grows larger, the frequency decreases. The frequency of adult crab molting is only once a year.

  • The largest coconut crabs can exert a force of 3,300 newtons (about 742 pound-force) with their pincers.

Coconut crabs can be aggressive if they feel threatened, but attacks on humans are rare because they are generally afraid of humans and would rather keep their distance. The only known predator adult coconut crabs have to worry about is humans; we can assume overharvesting is a potential, though not likely. What needs to be clear is that you need to confirm whether they are fresh before buying edible coconut crabs. A dead crab can be poisonous.
