Caspian Horse Size report

The Caspian horse is a rediscovered, nearly endangered horse breed. In 1965, Louise Frouze, an American woman who ran a children's equestrian center in Iran, found a pony that was said to have appeared in the Caspian region. What she found was not a pony, but a Caspian horse once considered extinct.

Caspian horses are smaller in size, and other characteristics are similar to ordinary horses. This horse was once the favorite of the kings of ancient Persia and disappeared from people's sight for more than 1000 years. After DNA testing and pedigree were established, Feruz launched a breeding program to save the Caspian horses from their fate.

Although the chaotic Iranian political situation made the job extremely difficult, Fruzi succeeded in the end. As of February 2012, the number of Caspian horses is still relatively rare, and we can see them in some areas of the United States, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. The following post shares more facts about Caspian horses.

Caspian Horse Size And Appearance

The Caspian is a small horse breed native to Northern Iran. It disappeared for nearly a thousand years and was not "resurrected" until it was discovered in 1965. They have a short, fine head with a pronounced forehead, large eyes, and short ears. The slim and graceful body has sloping shoulders, good withers, and a high-set tail. Although the Caspian horse is small in stature, its vitality is tenacious, its speed is not inferior to other horses, its jumping ability is excellent, and its appearance is elegant. The common colors are bay, grey, black, dun, or chestnut. A few have white markings on the head and legs. Interestingly, some lack chestnuts or ergots.

Average Size of Caspian Horse

Although its original height probably ranged between 9 and 11.2 hands (91 and 117 cm), it is termed a horse rather than a pony. It is believed to be one of the world's oldest horse or pony breeds. Caspian horses generally stand between 100 to 120 cm tall, and better feeding conditions outside Iran often result in taller specimens. The typical lifespan is between 20-30 years.

Final Words

The Caspian horse is one of the world's oldest and smallest horse breeds. Archaeological evidence shows that its history can be traced back to 5,000 years ago, and some people even believe that the Caspian horse is the ancestor of the Arabian horse. But the Caspian is again a "young" horse breed. Caspians are described as kind, intelligent, and willing. They can do heavy work like other horses, even living in remote areas. Such excellent adaptability ensures that this horse breed, which once only appeared in stone carvings, has been living on the planet. However, this breed is again endangered.
