Carat Size report

Carat Weight

Carat weight is often confused with visual size, even though it is a measurement of weight, not its size. Another misperception is that a larger carat is always heavier than smaller carat weight. At the same time, a big diamond can indeed be a status symbol, such as those owned by royals and celebrities.

Carat weight is also not related to sparkle. Beautiful sparkle is the result of a well-crafted cut. A high carat weight diamond with a poor cut may look smaller than a diamond with a smaller carat weight and an excellent cut.

Carat (ct.) refers to the unique unit of weight used exclusively to weigh gems and diamonds. The weight will visually show itself differently depending on the shape and type of gemstone being considered. The following introduces more details about carat size conversion.

History of Carat

The term "carat" comes from the Greek word meaning "fruit of the carob tree." In ancient times, carob seeds were used as standards for weight measurements since they were considered even in weight. In 1907 at the Fourth General Conference on Weights and Measures, it was agreed that a modern diamond carat should equal precisely 200 milligrams. Carats can also be measured in points; 100 points equals a full carat.

Carat Size Guide

Since carat is a unit of weight, not all diamonds of equal carat weight will appear to be the same size due to their differing measurements. For example, a 1.00 ct. Round diamond's diameter will measure around 6.5mm, and a 1.00 ct. Round sapphire will measure approximately 6.0mm due to the varying density of different gemstones.

Total carat weight (t.c.w.) is a phrase that represents the total weight of all diamonds or other gemstones in a piece of jewelry when more than one gemstone is used. Diamond solitaire earrings, for example, are usually quoted in t.c.w., indicating the combined weight of the diamonds in both earrings.

Carat Size Conversion

Diamond Carat Chart is a system of measuring the weight of a diamond particle, how it looks, and how large or small it is. The carat is one of the factors considered when choosing a diamond because it is one of the main characteristics of diamonds (4Cs), and other "C" refer to color, clarity, and cut. One carat is equal to 1/5 of 1 gram (0.20 gram).

It needs to be emphasized again that the carat has nothing to do with the size of the diamond. If it has an excellent cut, a gorgeous sparkling diamond is guaranteed. A 1 carat round diamond with a top cut will have the following dimensions:

  • Diameter: 6.4 – 6.5 mm
  • Crown: 33.2 mm2

Impact of Carat Weight on Price

The relationship between carat weight and price depends on the rarity or availability of a rough gem. Larger diamonds are much more valuable because they are discovered in nature much less frequently than small ones. Carat price is also a function of finding rough crystals with desirable color and internal and external characteristics that will positively influence clarity when the diamond is cut. Once cut, color, and clarity grade have been determined, the carat weight can be easily determined according to the budget.

Relation Between Carat and Cut

Carat weight is not the ultimate factor in determining the value of a diamond. The complex interaction between various elements leads to its beauty and elegance. The most important of the 4Cs is cut because it has the most significant influence on a diamond's sparkle.

Carat Tips For Purchasing A Diamond

  • Specific settings can make a diamond appear larger. The most popular cut shape is round. And the halo has a ring of small diamonds around the center stone. The ratio of the small to large diamonds skews the perspective in your favor, making the center diamond seem larger.
  • The ring band size affects the look of a diamond’s carat. Selecting a thin ring creates a perspective that makes the center stone appear larger. A popular band to achieve this is the pavé, which features small diamonds embedded in the band.
  • Total Carat Weight (t.c.w.). It is the measurement of all the diamonds in any given piece combined. So, be sure to inquire about the weights of the individual diamonds in any piece that you are buying.

Carat weight has become a symbol of a person’s status and wealth, but larger weight is not always better for diamonds. Instead, focus on a balance of the 4Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat to make a perfect purchase.
