History of Buckingham Palace

From 1703 to 1705, John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham and Normanby, built a large town hall called Buckingham Palace, which constituted the main building. In 1761, King George III of England acquired the mansion and used it as a private residence. Buckingham Palace has been in the royal family since 1761. Since then, the expansion of the Palace has continued for more than 75 years, mainly by architects John Nassi and Edward Broll, framing a three-sided building for the central courtyard.

After Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, Buckingham Palace became the official residence of the King of England. In the 1840s, the public facade of the Palace began to construct, forming a continuation of the image of Buckingham Palace. During World War II, the Palace Chapel was destroyed by a German bomb attack; the Queen's Gallery, established on its site, opened to the public in 1962 to showcase the Royal Collection.

Final Words

Today, Buckingham Palace is very much a working building and the centrepiece of the UK's constitutional monarchy, serving as the venue for many royal events and ceremonies. An interesting fact is that when the Queen's royal standard flag flies above the palace, the Queen is currently in residence at the palace. When the Union Jack billows elegantly in the wind, it means that the Queen is elsewhere. Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every summer.
