Battery Size report

Battery SizesBatteries are handy to all of us as consumers. With so many battery choices, you will need to find the right battery type and size for your particular device. Everyone knows that the batteries you put in your TV remote are not the same as the battery under the hood of your car. If you make a mistake in the dimensions of your battery, it will not fit into its housing and will be unusable.

Batteries standardized by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) have a clear, internationally valid designation. And the manufacturer's designation and the battery voltage are always printed on the battery housing.

Using the right kind of battery makes all the difference in your piece of equipment's overall performance and lifespan. Picking the correct battery is no longer a tricky thing. This article will break down the various types of common battery sizes and types so you can get the most use out of your device.

Battery Size Chart

The IEC has imposed a standard for battery size. Most Anglo-Saxon countries used references in letters, such as AA, C, D, etc. And other countries use references letters and digits, such as AA, Lr20, 6Lr61, etc. The following are the most commonly used battery sizes.

Common Battery Types

Below are common battery types in our daily life.

  • Lithium Batteries: Lithium batteries are one of the most commonly used battery types. They offer the highest energy density of any other battery cell, meaning they store more energy than other batteries.
  • Alkaline Batteries: Alkaline batteries are economical, easy to dispose of. Almost every standard-size battery offers an alkaline construction, making it perfect for most devices.
  • Rechargeable Batteries: They are cost-effective types and come in many different shapes and sizes. Rechargeable batteries include lithium-ion batteries, NiCd batteries, NiMH. Lithium-ion batteries can be recharged over and over again. NiCd batteries come in standard sizes, like AA, AAA, C, and 9V. They will maintain a steady voltage up until the battery is depleted.

Common Battery Sizes

Generally, the larger the battery is, the more capacity it has for energy storage. So even though a big and small battery are both rated at 1.5V, the big battery stores more energy and provides a longer battery life. Your application typically determines the battery size you need, and in some cases, you may have multiple choices that will work. There are common battery sizes you should know.

AA Batteries

This size is also known as "double-A." AA batteries are by far the most popular battery size that can be used in many applications. We can purchase these batteries almost anywhere. When it comes to standard replaceable batteries, most people only know AA batteries. AA batteries measure at 1.5V and work well for devices that require a somewhat high current draw but are not in constant use.

Common Battery Sizes

AAA Batteries

It is also known as "triple-A." AAA batteries are also the most popular battery size. Triple-A batteries are often used for small electronic devices, such as TV remote controls, kitchen timers, graphing calculators, and bathroom scales. AAA batteries, like AA batteries, also measure at 1.5V but generate less energy due to their smaller size.

C Batteries

These heavy-duty batteries are mainly used for toys, flashlights, and portable radios. These 1.5V batteries are perfect for heavy-duty applications where batteries require frequent use, and people can be sure that their device is operating with safe, reliable power.

D Batteries

These large, bulky batteries provide hours of use and power to various commercial, heavy-use devices. D batteries are essential and work best for large flashlights, stereos, and hands-free soap or paper towel dispensers.

9V Batteries

One common household battery size is the E-size battery, more commonly referred to as a 9V battery. 9-volt batteries are rectangular and are the most common batteries found in smoke detectors.

23A Batteries

This small battery is commonly used in small devices such as garage door openers, specialized medical devices, watches, or remotes. 23A batteries deliver 12 volts of power, and it is used in applications that require infrequent but powerful bursts of energy.

According to the Standardization of IEC, Non-rechargeable batteries fall under the IEC standard 60086, and rechargeable batteries, such as automotive batteries, are standardized according to IEC 60095. The most common battery sizes for small household electronics are AA and AAA. For larger household electronics, the most common battery size options are C and D.
