Asiatic Lion Size report

The lion is a big feline and the only one living in groups. Currently, lions are mainly distributed in Africa and the South Asian subcontinent. Those distributed in Africa are collectively called African lions, and those distributed in the South Asian subcontinent are called Asiatic lions. Due to the different living environments, these two lions have huge differences in habits and appearance.

Asiatic lions and African lions belong to the same species, and there is no reproductive isolation; however, Asiatic lions cannot combine with African lions to produce healthy offspring, which is related to the genetic defects of Asiatic lions themselves. Currently, Asiatic lions only exist in Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat, India. They were bred from more than a dozen Asiatic lions at the beginning of the last century.

Asiatic lions prefer to inhabit vast and deciduous forests; carnivores' main prey are sambar, flower deer, blue wildebeest, Indian gazelle, wild boar, and livestock. About 500 Asiatic lions in Gir Forest National Park in India live in 1,412 square kilometers of jungle and vast deciduous forest.

Asiatic Lion Size And Appearance

The Asiatic lion (scientific name: Panthera leo persica) is a subspecies of lion that survives only in India. They were once distributed from the Mediterranean to India, occupying most of Southwest Asia, hence their name, "Persian subspecies." There are only 500-600 Asiatic lions in the wild today, and they all live only in the Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat, India.

Asiatic lions are the smallest of all lion subspecies. Although male Asiatic lions also have long manes on their necks, they are significantly shorter than those of African male lions. It also has a small amount of long hair on the elbows of its forelimbs, a larger bulbous hair on the tail, and thicker dorsal hair. Lion cubs have spots, and their coats are mainly brownish-yellow. The most distinguishing characteristic of the Asiatic lion is the longitudinal fold of skin that runs along its belly, which is absent in African lions.

Average Size of Asiatic Lion

The biggest difference between African lions and Asiatic lions is their size. African lions are, on average, 25% larger than Asiatic lions. Asiatic lions usually weigh 110kg and 190kg, while African lions weigh 120kg and 275kg (265-600 lbs). Also, most African lions have thicker temples than Asiatic lions. Asiatic Lions have a shoulder height between 30"-46" (76-117 cm), a body length of 4'7"-6'5" (1.4-2 m), and their long tail is about 30"-40" (76-102 cm) long.

Weight120-275 kg (256-600 lbs)
Shoulder Height76-117 cm (30"-46")
Body Length1.4-2 m (4'7"-6'5")
Tail Length76-102 cm (30"-40")

Lifespan And Reproduction

Female Asiatic lions reach sexual maturity at 2.5 years old, while male Asiatic lions take four years to mate in October and November. The gestation period of a lioness is generally 100-119 days, and each litter produces 2-3 cubs, but the mortality rate of the cubs is high. Lion cubs can participate in hunting activities with their mother after three months and need to live with their mother for two years. However, 70%-80% of lion cubs do not live to two years old. Asiatic Lions have a typical lifespan of 12-18 years in the wild and 18-20 years in captivity.

Living Habits

Asiatic lions are highly gregarious animals, but the Asiatic lions' group is smaller than the African lions', with an average of only five female lions. Unlike African lions, the males do not tend to live with the females unless they are mating or have a large kill. Male Asiatic lions are solitary and may form loose groups, while female Asiatic lions form stronger and more numbered prides with other female lions and their cubs.

They need to drink a lot of water after they are full. The area where Asiatic lions live has a tropical monsoon climate with few rainy seasons and frequent droughts, so they often need to travel far away to find water sources after predation. This harsh environment not only makes drinking water difficult for Asiatic lions, but they also have less prey. The low survival rate of cubs is also caused by insufficient water and food.

Final Words

Asiatic lions were once found in Turkey, Asia, and eastern India, but with the rise of guns worldwide, they were hunted to near extinction. Asiatic lions have retreated to the southeast corner; their habitats are dwindling due to the skyrocketing human population. Because the extant Asiatic lions are all descendants of the same ancestor, they have formed a racial regression. They are extremely susceptible to diseases and genes that lead to all extinction.
