Argentinosaurus Size report

Argentinosaurus belongs to the titanosaur group of sauropod dinosaurs. The origin of the name of this ancient species is very simple, meaning the dinosaur species found in Argentina. Argentinosaurus lived from the mid-Cretaceous period to 93 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period, about 100 million years ago.

Sauropod dinosaurs were one of the most powerful biological species on Earth and successfully dominated the entire Late Jurassic period. Since there was a long stable climate in the late Jurassic period, the warm climate was perfect for the growth of many ferns and other plants that sauropod dinosaurs liked, so these dinosaurs could grow to be extremely large.

During the Cretaceous period, most sauropod dinosaurs disappeared due to climate and environmental changes. However, a sauropod in Argentina survived and evolved to be larger, that is, Argentinosaurus. Argentinosaurus was one of the largest land dinosaurs that ever lived on Earth. The following post will describe how they look and how large they could be.

Argentinosaurus Size And Description

Human beings have not yet discovered the complete bone fossils of Argentinosaurus, but paleontologists have discovered their vertebral fossils. Argentinosaurus is undoubtedly the ultimate product of sauropod evolution. When the Jurassic period and the Cretaceous period alternated, the crustal activity was very intense, and most sauropods could not adapt to climate change and become extinct in the end. The climate in the early Cretaceous was colder and gradually moved from South America and closer to the equator, so the climate was mild and warm. Coupled with the isolated geographical environment of South America, it also allows some ancient species to continue.

In 1987, some vertebrae with a length of 2 meters, a width of 1.5 meters, and a weight of 1.0 tons were discovered in South America. When the fossil of Argentinosaurus was first discovered, people thought it was the bones of some monster; scientists finally confirmed that it was a huge dinosaur fossil, which has been stored in the Atlanta Museum. Biologists infer that most of their habitats are lakesides surrounded by forests, with abundant water and food.

Average Size of Argentinosaurus

Argentinosaurus is a large herbivorous sauropod dinosaur with an overall body length of 30-40 meters and the standing height of 12-15 meters. From its skeletal structure, it can be inferred that Argentinosaurus had a fat and thick body. Although it was similar to Brachiosaurus, Argentinosaurus was much heavier. It weighs up to 80-100 tonnes, equivalent to the combined weight of 20 elephants. The typical lifespan of the Argentinosaurus was between 35-45 years.

Quick Facts
Type:sauropod dinosaur
Diet:herbivorous
How it move:4 legs
When it lived:mid-late Cretaceous Period
Height12-15 m
Overall Length30-40 m
Weight80-100 tons
Lifespan35-45 years

Living Habits

According to known archaeological discoveries and research, Argentinosaurus is a herd animal that gathers every year on a vast plain with sufficient food to lay eggs and hatch. Each female Argentinosaurus lays several 20cm-diameter eggs. If hatched successfully, it will take about 15 years for the little Argentinosaurus to reach adulthood. While growing up, however, only a few individuals survive to adulthood.

Final Words

The knowledge of dinosaurs is still very limited, and it is believed that only breakthrough discoveries can give us a deeper understanding of the Argentinosaurus. Argentinosaurus was undoubtedly one of the largest animals that ever lived on land. The walking speed of the Argentinosaurus is about 7.2km/h. However, even an animal as large as Argentinosaurus may be unable to escape predators' attack. The largest carnivorous dinosaur, Mapleton, was the greatest threat in the Argentinosaurus world.
