Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, is one of the oldest stadiums in Brazil; officially known as the Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães, built in 1914, and later due to aging facilities, the arena closed in 1970 and reopened in 1984 after simple renovations.

Arena da Baixada Size And Structure

Located unusually on the east-west axis, the original stadium provided a unique layout. The southern side of the pitch initially had no room for spectators, later only a modest single tier. The stadium was the first in Brazil to sell its naming rights; it was known as Kyocera Arena between 2005 and 1 April 2008.

Redevelopment design was created in 2009, envisioning a completed seating bowl, new facades, and Brazil's first retractable roof over the pitch. It was the first retractable roof stadium built in South America. Panasonic Brazil installed the first digital media distribution system in Arena da Baixada, called Digital Media Center. It consists of 220 Viera TVs and billboard servers, allowing fans to watch the game's highlights. The building would be adjoined by a smaller indoor hall, becoming a major entertainment hub.

Arena da Baixada Capacity

The existing Arena da Baixada was built between the end of 1997 and 1999, with a capacity of 28,413 seats, as the home stadium of Clube Atlético Paranaense. In 2012, the stadium was expanded to a capacity of 43,981 and hosted 4 group matches in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Arena da Baixada currently can seat 42,372 spectators.

In the 100 years after 1914, the Baixada Arena underwent a series of works, including closure, reconstruction, renovation, and name change.
