Arena Castelão Size and Structure

Arena Castelão was chosen as one of the venues for the 2014 World Cup, necessitating a more extensive reconstruction. Work began in early 2011 and included demolition and reconstruction of the ground floor stands, installing a new roof, and refurbishing of the remainder. The stadium officially reopened on December 16, 2012. At the same time, the name was changed to Arena Castelão, after the area it stands in.

Brazil's venues for the 2014 World Cup meet internationally certified sustainable construction and management standards. Twelve stadiums, 6 of which are LEED certified, including Arena Castelão in Fortaleza. The transportation around the Arena Castelão has also been upgraded, with four bus lanes, a light rail, and two subway stations, which makes it easier for fans to reach the stadium. The area covers restaurants, cinemas, hotels, and the Olympic Sports Center's comprehensive facilities.

Arena Castelão Capacity

The old Arena Castelão originally had only the first tier of stands and was uncovered, with a capacity for around 70,000 fans. In 1980, the second level was extended to cover the entire stadium. The stadium received a roof in 2002, and subsequent renovations brought capacity back to about 60,000. After the renovation in 2012, the stadium's capacity increased to 63,903, with 1,900 underground car park spaces, executive boxes, VIP areas, a media center, mixed areas, and a refreshed changing room. A new roof covers all seating areas.

Rousseff presided over the kick-off ceremony at the Castelão Stadium in the northern port city of Fortaleza on December 16, 2012, marking the completion of the stadium's renovation. For the 2014 World Cup, an estimated 190 million euros was spent upgrading the stadium, which included moving the seats closer to the pitch and adding a larger roof.
