The Anderson Bridge was meant to replace the overwhelmed Cavenagh Bridge in the 1900s. The final bridge is a two-way driveway flanked by sidewalks. It has a basic arched structure comprising three steel arches with powerful steel ribs, two rusticated archways, and a fluted pier at each end. Anderson Bridge has become one of the most important bridges in Singapore and has played a huge role in easing traffic.
The original Anderson Bridge was not technically capable of handling vehicles over 10 tons, which was a surprise because the bridge, made of iron bars, appeared indestructible. Since the double-decker bus has an empty weight of 10 tons, the bus company has to restrict the use of the Anderson Bridge for double-decker buses for safety reasons. The Bureau of Public Works investigated the bridge's structure at the end of 1985 and started reinforcement works two years later, after which various vehicles could safely pass on the bridge.
