Al Bayt Stadium, also known as Al Khor Stadium, is located in Al Khor, 35 km north of the capital Doha, a city famous for pearl diving and fishing. Dar Al-Handasah's design for the Al Bayt Stadium is inspired by the "Bayt al sha'ar" used by ancient Qatar and the nomadic peoples of the Gulf region, celebrating the wisdom and history of the people of Qatar.
Known for its unique design, Al Bait Stadium embodies a long-renowned Arab quality of hospitality. One of the 2022 World Cup venues is about to welcome guests from all over the world, entertain them and invite them to experience the local traditional culture. During the World Cup, Al Bayt Stadium will host the opening match and the nine games between the group stage and the semi-finals.
In addition to providing a first-class venue for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Al Bayt Stadium is a shining example of future stadium construction. The stadium's design pays homage to Qatar's past and presents while keeping an eye on the future. Qatar keeps sustainable development goals in mind, and the stadium will serve as a model for green development. This post explains more details about this unique stadium.
Al Bayt Stadium Size And Structure
The construction of Al Bayt Stadium began in late 2015; it officially opened on 30 November 2021. The shape of Al Bayt Stadium is inspired by the Bayt al sha'ar of Qatar's nomadic people; the stadium's magnificent tent structure envelopes an ultra-modern football stadium. The tent structure measures 372.5 m x 310 m, and its height is 37 m. Traditionally, the black stripes on the distinctive exterior are also inspired by patterns found on Qatari nomadic tribes and family tents, while the vibrant SADU pattern in the red interior welcomes fans.
In addition to its eye-catching appearance, the stadium's design is also very functional. The shade provided by the tent structure and its retractable roof complements an innovative cooling system, which can cooperate with the sunshade roof to reduce the internal temperature of the venue. The roof closes and opens in approximately 20 minutes. The stadium and the rectangular square around it sit on the 14-meter-high artificial circular platform.
Al Bayt Stadium Capacity
The entire stadium covers an area of approximately 200,000 square metres and is surrounded by a park the size of which is comparable to an area of 30 football pitches. Al Bayt Stadium has a capacity of roughly 60,000 seats, divided over three tiers. After the World Cup, the top tier will be removed, reducing capacity to 32,000 seats. Reducing the stadium's capacity after the World Cup will benefit the local community in Al Khor. The new capacity will be more suitable for other football events and create enough space for other facilities to attract tourists to the coastal community.

During the World Cup, the stadium will host several first-round group matches, including the opening match and a round of 16, quarter-final, and semi-final matches. After the game, Arena will reach even more people around the globe in extraordinary ways. Like a true nomad's tent, it's portable and transformable. After the World Cup, 28,000 seats in the stadium will be dismantled and provided to developing countries that need sports infrastructure. Sustainability also drove the design of the area around Albait Stadium. Parks and landscaping are an integral part of the design plan for the surrounding area, providing local families with valuable green outdoor space.
